Port v Trallwng / Welshpool - 19/08/03

A very warm welcome to our first home match of the new season. A season which sees the club return to the Welsh Premier after a five year absence. Welshpool Town are our opponents tonight in a League Cup preliminary round tie. Welcome to Russell Cadwalader and his side here to Y Traeth. I have known Russ for many years and have spoken to him during the summer. I know his pre-season plans were somewhat disrupted by the situation regarding the relegation and then reprieve of the club, but I am pleased that they are still with us in the Welsh Premier and I am sure that they will provide us with a tough test this evening.

Saturday's match at Connah's Quay was an excellent result and an excellent performance. The lads battled hard for every ball and showed real character especially after the Nomads got it back to 1 - 1. We have raised expectations with our supporters and amongst ourselves with that win. We have proved that we can perform at this level and we are not out of our depth. However this is only one win, only three points, we cannot get carried away. We need to perform like that week in week out if we are to make a mark this season.

We scored three great goals on Saturday, and boy did our traveling support make some noise when they went in. A big thanks to all who made the effort to get to the game. It is a big boost to the lads to have some support behind them. It is not possible for everyone to go away, let's hope that we can make some noise again this evening. I would ask you our regular supporters to try and persuade a friend or relative to come down with you, I am sure they will be pleasantly surprised by the standard of football. If we could find 30 new supporters it would make a big difference not only to the clubs finances but also with the noise level at the ground. We have a team who work hard and their effort and commitment is second to none. If we can increase the crowds then we can improve the atmosphere here at Y Traeth and your support will push the club forward.

I would like to welcome our three new signings to their first competitive match at Y Traeth, Mark, Alan and Emrys will I am sure be a big asset to the club in the weeks and months ahead. Also I would like to thank Osian for all his hard work during preseason. He has got the lads fit and ready and it showed on Saturday.

Finally on a lighter note it was nice to see John Jones score his one goal for the season on Saturday. Last season he left it to the very last game, this season he got the honor of scoring our first back in the top flight. It's clear he doesn't score often, as he had no idea how to celebrate. I thought the lads would be forced to chase him down the tunnel. Enjoy tonight's game.
