Port v Rhyl - 01/05/04

Welcome to the Traeth for our last game of the season. It is fitting that after a tough Welsh Premier League campaign we should host one of the two teams fighting for the title in our last game. Today's opponents Rhyl are having a sensational season. They have battled all season long and are now in the final straight of a season long marathon. As yet they have won nothing but are in a great position to win a cabinet full of trophies. They are in three Cup finals and may regard today as a fourth Cup final as the League campaign comes down to just one game.

At this time of the season it is a chance to look back and thank a great many people. We have had a hard season but we have achieved our number one priority namely staying in the Welsh Premier. We also achieved our second aim of 10 League wins. We have done that with a small squad and injuries have stretched the squad to the limits on occasion. However each and every player has come in and done a good job for the team. We have in the end, survived quite comfortably and done so with a squad of local players, something many said was impossible. Straight up and straight down was the prediction of some, but we have proved the doubters wrong and that is pleasing. The invaluable experience gained this season will serve us well in the future. A large number of the players are 25 or less and have a good number of years at this level ahead of them and they will definitely improve. We have struggled on occasion but I am proud of the players and each and every one deserves a lot of credit.

At the end of the season with no trophy won, it was disappointing not to have had a chance to retain the Challenge Cup. However I would like to thank the Directors for their unstinting support of Osian and myself. Thanks also to Bob for his work on the ground despite being unwell for the last couple of months. Thanks also to Gerallt for his help with this column. Thanks also to all who help on match days, canteen staff, programme sellers, raffle sellers and everyone else who works hard to raise funds for the club. Thanks also to Gareth and Iwan who produce the web site which is an essential way for many to keep up with what the club is up to.

There is no better award for a player than to win the Players Player of the Year Award. This season the winner was John Gwynfor Jones who has been Mr. Consistent all season. John received just under 50% of the vote but others who got votes were Richie Owen, Gerard McGuigan, Lee Webber; Dave Evans and Gareth Parry. The award of Clubman of the Year for the first team has gone to Campbell Harrison who despite not playing all that much this term has been a massive character in the dressing room and a big help in building team spirit and togetherness.

Finally a big thank you to you the supporters who follow the club regularly. It is always nice to hear your support for the lads. Thanks for all your encouragement this season and I hope that you enjoy this final game of the season which is certain to be an exciting affair.
