Porthmadog v Drenewydd / Newtown 11/03/06 (English)

Gohiriadau
Roedd yn siom i’r gêm, a oedd i’w chwarae nos Fercher, yn erbyn Llanelli gael ei gohirio. ond gyda phyllau ar y cae nid oedd dewis arall. Yn ffodus, hysbyswyd Llanelli mewn da bryd a chyn iddynt ddechrau eu taith. Mae’n hen draddodiad Prydeinig i sgwrsio am y tywydd ond, yn ddiweddar, y tywydd sydd wedi dominyddu Uwch Gynghrair Cymru. Dim ond un gêm gafodd ei chwarae yn y gynghrair yr wythnos ddiwethaf a gohiriwyd pob un o’r gêmau canol wythnos. Mae swyddogion y gynghrair, hyd yma, wedi ymddangos yn amharod i ganiatáu ymestyniad i’r tymor ond, gyda’r gohiriadau diweddar, mae hynny’n dechrau edrych yn anorfod. Rhaid dweud fod yr ad-drefnu wedi digwydd heb anghytundeb gyda swyddogion y Gynghrair yn ymateb yn hyblyg ac yn deg.

Cyfnod Prysur
Erbyn hyn, rydym wedi cychwyn ar gyfres o bedair gêm mewn wyth niwrnod –tasg anodd i chwaraewyr rhan-amser. Ni all y mwyafrif chwarae ar eu gorau dros bedair gêm –bydd blinder ac anafiadau yn siwr o ymddangos. Bydd yr wythnos nesaf yn brawf ar y garfan. Mae’n debyg iawn bydd rhai o’r chwaraewyr ifanc yn cael eu cyfle.

Toriad yn y Tymor
Gyda’r gwanwyn ar ddod, mae’r tywydd yn waeth na fuodd o drwy’r tymor. Gyrrodd y gynghrair holiadur i bob clwb rhyw fis neu ddau yn ôl yn gofyn ein barn ynglyn â thoriad yng nghanol y tymor. Mae’r gohiriadau yn ystod yr wythnos yn tanlinellu’r broblem. Pryd fydd y toriad? Ychydig ar y naw fyddai wedi cynnig mis Mawrth! Rhagfyr, neu Ionawr neu Chwefror o bosib fyddai dewis y mwyafrif. Penderfynodd y clwb nad oedd yn cefnogi’r syniad a does dim wedi’i glywed am y peth ers hynny. Mae’r mater yma, fel pêl droed haf, yn codi’i ben bob hyn a hyn.

Rygbi
Roeddem yn wynebu cystadleuaeth am gefnogwyr ddydd Sadwrn oddi wrth rygbi. Roedd yn arfer fy ngwylltio, fel chwaraewr, pan oedd rhai yn dewis gweld rygbi yn lle chwarae pêl-droed. Mae chwarae bob amser yn well dewis na gwylio. Bu peth ymdrech eleni i osgoi gwrthdaro gyda chystadleuaeth y Chwe Gwlad ond eto ni lwyddwyd yn hollol.

Mike
I orffen, a braidd yn hwyr, llongyfarchiadau i Mike Foster ar gyrraedd carreg filltir nodedig y 300 o gêmau yn Uwch Gynghrair Cymru. Bu Mike yn was ffyddlon i’r clwb ac, os ychwanegwch y gêmau a chwaraeodd yn y Cymru Alliance, mae’n siwr fod y cyfanswm dros 400. Mae Mike yn dal yn un o chwaraewyr mwyaf sgilgar y gynghrair ac rwy’n siwr y gall fynd ymlaen am sawl tymor eto –edrychwch ar Clayton Blackmore ac mae o dros ei 40!

Daliwch i gredu.

Postponements
It was disappointing to have to postpone Wednesday’s match against Llanelli due to a waterlogged pitch, but there was no alternative as numerous puddles had been created on the pitch. Fortunately Llanelli were informed before they began their journey. It is a good old fashioned British tradition to speak about the weather, but the British weather has been dominating the Welsh Premier League over the past week. Only one match was played in the League last week and all the midweek games were postponements. League officials have so far been reluctant to sanction an extension to the season but with the number of recent postponements that may now be inevitable. I have to say that the rearrangements so far have been done very amicably and the League have been quite flexible and even handed.

Tough schedule
We have now started a series of four games in eight days –that is a tough schedule for part-time players. Most players can’t play to the best of their ability for all four games –tiredness and injuries creep in. The next week or so will be a real test for the squad. It is more than likely that some of the younger players will get a chance.

Winter Break
We are fast approaching spring and the weather is worse than it has been all season. The league sent out a questionnaire to all clubs a month or two back requesting our thoughts on a mid-season break. This past week’s postponements underline the problem of a mid-season break of a week or two or three. When do you have it? Few would have suggested that the break should be in mid March. December or January or possibly February could have been proposed. The club decided that it did not support the idea and nothing has been heard since, but it is an issue just like summer football that comes up every now and again.

Rugby
For the Newtown game we faced competition for spectators with rugby. Personally it always annoyed me as a player when other players would cry off matches citing they were going to watch the rugby. Surely it is always better to participate in a game rather than watch. Some attempts have been made this season to avoid clashes with the Six Nations but yet gain a number of games have clashed.

Mike
Finally, somewhat belatedly, may I congratulate Mike Foster on recently reaching the milestone of 300 WPL games. Mike has been a great servant of the club and I am sure that if you add up the matches Mike played in the Cymru Alliance he must be over 400 for the club in total. Mike remains one of the best ball players in the league and I am sure he has a few more seasons in him – look at Clayton Blackmore still playing at 40 plus.

Thanks for your continued support.
