Port v Caernarfon - 23/12/00

A warm welcome to Y Traeth for our first home match since the 25th of November. I have written these notes for two other matches but both were postponed. Today we welcome our local rivals Caernarfon to Y Traeth in what is traditionally an entertaining and hard fought confrontation. We played at the Oval two weeks ago and were given a real lesson by a strong and capable Caernarfon side. They are certainly the best team we have played this season and are in my opinion very strong favorites for the League title. Our young squad will hopefully have learnt a lot from the experience at the Oval, lessons which will be of long term benefit to them and Porthmadog Football Club.

As you are aware I have been having problems with my back following a slip disc earlier in the season and I have been advised in the last 10 days to take six weeks complete rest in an attempt to cure this persistent problem. This means that Osian Roberts will be taking charge of team affairs for the coming weeks. I will do all I can to help Osian and will continue to be involved in picking the team but will not be at matches or take training. We at Porthmadog are lucky to have an experienced coach of the caliber of Osian on hand to take over I am sure he will do a fine job.

Despite the circumstances of last Saturday's draw at Lex, there are numerous plus which can be taken from the game. Firstly we did not loose, secondly we scored three fine goals, thirdly our two strikers on the day Emyr Jones and Carl Owen both got off the mark in the League, Emyr had scored previously in the League Cup.

The situation with regard to Emyr is that following the departure of Mark Owens he has the opportunity to be a regular in the first team. I have spoken to John Williams and we both agree that he deserves a run in the first team. I will make him available for important Reserve team matches. By all accounts he had a good game last Saturday and hopefully he can continue with that kind of form. There are others in the Reserves who I think deserve the opportunity of first team football. I hope to be able to give the chance to one or two more as the season progresses.

Please do get behind the lads this afternoon, they will appreciate your support.
